Manipulation Therapy
Graston Technique is a popular treatment for muscle, tendon, ligament, and soft tissue injuries. It is very effective at speeding healing and recovery, in both acute and chronic injuries. It is one of the most well-known manual therapy approaches that utilizes instruments or tools. Graston Technique is utilized in many professional, Olympic, and collegiate sports therapy programs. Specifically-designed stainless steel instruments have rounded, concave and convex edges. The edges are not sharp. Graston tools are classified under Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) and are used to detect and effectively treat soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation. With these instruments the practitioner can scan over and detect areas of fibrotic tissue.
Spinal Decompression
Lumbar Spinal Decompression therapy can also be utilized for patients with severe neural foraminal degeneration or spinal disc herniations. The treatment “pulls the joints apart” decreasing compression forces and increasing blood flow to the spinal discs. Sciatica coming from a disc compressing on the spinal cord or nerve root responds very well to this type of traction. Myofascial Therapy
Since the top priority is decreasing the patient’s pain level, begin with modalities directed towards that end: chiropractic adjustment to realign the cervical spine, myofascial release or shockwave to reduce tightness in the scalenes, levator scapulae and upper trapezius muscles, cold laser, interferential, ice and stretching for analgesia.
Therapeutic Exercise
Performing push-ups on the ball very quickly overworks and fatigues the shoulder stabilizers. Therapeutic exercises that focus on the stabilizers' strength and endurance result in long-term recovery and reduce the risk of reaggravation. There are a variety of stabilization exercises that involve exercise balls, BOSU, rubber bands, and vibration platforms.
