Post-partum depression. Did you know that post-partum depression is now commonly referred to as PMAD: Post-partum mood and anxiety disorder ? Post-partum symptoms may present with a high level of anxiety or irritability in addition to depressive symptoms. About a third of women experience post-partum mood shifts that warrant treatment with medication, counseling, or a combination of the two. At the 6-week post-partum visit, patients are given a questionnaire to fill out about mood fluctuations following childbirth. If there are concerns, patients are referred to Dr. Kersey for evaluation. Dr. Kersey works with our medical staff to provide treatment options for those who have significant mood alterations following pregnancy and childbirth.
Labor and Delivery
The most common, and mildest, form of post partum depression sets in 2-3 days after childbirth. Women may feel depressed, anxious and upset. They may feel angry with their partners, their new baby and other children. They may cry suddenly, question their ability to care for their baby and have difficulty making choices. Mercifully, this form of post partum depression, often called the “baby blues,” disappears without treatment within 1-2 weeks.

Cervical Cancer
One of the most common causes of an abnormal result is human papilloma virus (HPV). This is a very common infection that causes abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix but that often causes no symptoms. Many women with HPV don’t know that they have it. There are several different types of HPV. Most of them don’t cause any problems or symptoms, but some kinds can increase your risk of cervical cancer. If you have abnormal results on your Pap test due to HPV, you may need to have the test repeated or have other tests done to follow up.
