Preventive Care

Dental Care

Veterinary Ophthalmology
Animals suffer from eye problems that are similar to those that affect humans. Between regular wellness visits, if your pet is squinting, rubbing their eyes, or if there is any swelling, redness, or discharge, they need to be seen by one of our veterinarians as soon as possible.

Parasites Treatment and Control
The adoption fee of our rescues reimburses us for their medical care so we can continue to help others in the future. They're all FeLV/FIV neg/neg, they've all been spayed and neutered respectively, microchipped, vaccinated (RCP series and Rabies), dewormed, and kept on Revolution for parasite control and prevention.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
All pets must be vaccinated: For the safety of all pets that board or groomed at our facility, we require documentation that a licensed veterinarian has administer vaccines at least 10 days prior to admission. For Cats, we require Feline Distemper (FVRCP) and Rabies vaccine. For Dogs we require, DHPP, Rabies, Bordetella (every 6 months), Canine Influenza (H3N2) and Rabies Vaccination. Provide proof of an annual negative fecal test
Pain Management
Twilight: When you are ready, the process starts with an injection that will be given in the region over the shoulders. This is a combination of a sedation to help your pet relax and a pain medication to help relieve your pet of any pain it may be feeling. This can take 5 to 15 minutes depending on the individual pet. After this has taken effect, your pet will be very relaxed and in a “twilight” but still conscious and know you are there.

Because many of these skin diseases bear close symptomatic resemblance to one another, diagnosing the cause of skin problems can be like detective work—ruling out one possibility at a time. At Crossroads Animal Hospital, we will try simple solutions first before ordering more expensive diagnostics and treatments.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
We ask that anyone with a fever, cough, shortness of breath, or that may have been exposed to someone with these symptoms or another infectious respiratory disease (ex. Influenza) to stay home. If your pet is in need of care for an illness or injury and you fall into one of these categories, please call our office so that we can devise a plan to safely see your pet without risking anyone’s health.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria. These bacteria can be found worldwide in soil and water. There are many strains of Leptospira bacteria that can cause disease. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, which means it can be spread from animals to people. Infection in people can cause flu-like symptoms and can cause liver or kidney disease. In the United States, most cases of human leptospirosis result from recreational activities involving water. Infection resulting from contact with an infected pet is much less common, but it is possible.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Panleukopenia (feline distemper): This is a parvovirus that can prove to be fatal for infected cats, especially young cats. The disease is often called feline distemper, although this name is, in fact, a bit of a misnomer.This vaccine is given every year. In kittens, this vaccine should be started at six to eight weeks of age and given every three to four weeks until the kitten is at least twelve weeks old. Adult cats with unknown vaccination histories or kittens older than twelve weeks of age need two vaccines to be protected.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
The feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection is a complex retrovirus that causes immunodeficiency disease in domestic cats. Immunodeficiency is the medical term used to describe the body’s inability to develop a normal immune response. As a result of immunodeficiency, most infected cats do not show symptoms and have normal life expectancy, however they are prone to developing other infections and certain types of cancer. A retrovirus, such as FIV is in the same class of viruses as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Canine influenza, or dog flu, is a highly contagious viral infection affecting dogs and also cats. At present, two strains of canine influenza virus have been identified in the United States: H3N8 and H3N2.
Ear Infection Treatment
Exams allow our veterinarians to detect problems and diseases that might go undiscovered otherwise, including dental disease, ear infections, heart murmurs, tumors, and skin infections.
Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
A veterinarian is professionally trained in assessing behavior problems. We can help diagnose the specific problem and recommend appropriate action. Most importantly, if your pet has developed an unpleasant behavior, the first thing we need to do is rule out underlying health issues. Your cat is missing the litter box? This could mean a urinary tract infection. Sudden change in personality? Perhaps it's related to abnormal thyroid hormone levels.

That’s why the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) commissioned a task force to create preventive healthcare guidelines for dogs and cats. There’s truth to the saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” since annual veterinary exams can catch manageable conditions like diabetes and dental disease, prevent issues with internal and external parasites, and slow the progression of common problems like osteoarthritis and kidney disease. Preventive healthcare enables veterinarians to provide high-quality care and ultimately promote a long, rewarding relationship between you and your pet.

Watch their weight. Pet obesity is reaching epidemic proportions—an estimated one out of every two pets is overweight or obese1. Being a fat cat or plump pup can have disastrous health effects, such as increasing the risk of diabetes, heart and respiratory disease, cancer, and arthritis. A slight adjustment to your pet’s diet or exercise regimen can make a huge difference, so ask your veterinarian for your pet’s target weight.

There are many skin disorders known to affect pets. These disorders may be the result of an infection (bacteria, fungus, or parasite), allergies, autoimmune disorders and metabolic diseases such as Cushing’s disease, or hypothyroidism.
Heart Disease Treatment
Kidney Disease Treatment
Adult heartworms are found in the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. Secondary liver and kidney damage may result. The worms can grow form 5 to 14 inches long. In advances cases, a hundred or more have been found in a single heart.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Annual dental exams and cleanings are recommended to protect your pet from many health problems and help them maintain a healthy and clean mouth. Studies show that 50% of all dogs and cats have some form of periodontal disease. That number jumps to 80% in pets that are 3 years of age or older. If left untreated, periodontal disease can cause infection, pain, and tooth loss over time. It can also lead to serious health problems like microscopic changes in the heart, liver, and kidneys. Because of this, we recommend an annual veterinary dental healthcare examination for all pets.
Cancer Treatment

Seizure Treatment
Anesthetic induction and maintenance: At that point, a breathing (trachea) tube will be placed and a gas anesthesia/oxygen mix will be administered directly into the lungs. Anesthesia is a drug-induced, reversible loss of consciousness that allows pets to undergo complicated or painful medical procedures without the distress or pain they would normally feel if they were conscious. Each anesthesia is tailored to your pet’s needs. Safety is our highest priority. Although anesthesia is necessary for many veterinary procedures, it is important to understand that undergoing anesthesia is not a simple procedure.

Crossroads Animal Hospital maintains an in-house laboratory that allows our team to quickly perform blood and urine tests instead of having to ship them to a third party laboratory. This is especially valuable if your pet is ill or needs emergency surgery.
Spaying and Neutering
Discuss when to spay or neuter. Spaying and neutering provides several health and behavior benefits. If it hasn’t already been done, talk to your veterinarian about the best time to perform this procedure. It could save your pet’s life by decreasing the risk of life-threatening diseases like pyometra (a uterine infection) and mammary, uterine, and testicular cancer. Plus, it will prevent unwanted litters of puppies and kittens from entering animal shelters.

Laboratory Services
Hepatobiliary Disease: Hepatitis and other forms of liver disease are common in pets. Blood tests can reveal abnormalities before your pet becomes ill.
