Anything that irritates the nasal tissues can cause congestion. The list of possible causes is lengthy and includes infections (colds, influenza and acute or chronic sinusitis), allergies, structural abnormalities (deviated septum, enlarged adenoids/tonsils, nasal polyps or tumors), non-allergic rhinitis, dry air, cold temperatures, bright lights, cluster headaches, hormonal changes, medications, thyroid problems, spicy foods, tobacco smoke and stress.
Medical Weight Loss
A diverticulum is a sac or pocket that forms on a portion of the body. A Zenker’s diverticulum is a pouch that develops on the pharynx, in the upper esophagus of the neck. It may trap food, causing difficulty or pain when swallowing. Other side effects include bad breath, regurgitation, coughing, unexplained weight loss, irritation of the throat and aspiration (the passage of food or liquid into the lungs). Zenker’s diverticulum is the most common type of esophageal diverticulum.
Snoring
Enlarged tonsils and adenoids are another problem; they block the airways and cause soreness, ear infections and breathing difficulties. Side effects include runny nose, snoring and sleep apnea. Steroid treatment is sometimes helpful, but in many cases, enlarged tonsils and adenoids need to be removed surgically.

An ear infection occurs when fluid becomes trapped in the middle ear following a viral or bacterial infection. This painful affliction is most common in children, but can affect people of all ages. Ear infections can be either acute (of short duration) or chronic (persisting or reoccurring frequently).

You can’t always stave off an ear infection, but there are steps you can take to reduce the chances of your child developing one. These include breast-feeding your baby, making sure he or she is up-to-date on vaccinations, practicing good hygiene (e.g., regular hand-washing), keeping your child away from tobacco smoke, and enrolling them in as small a day care or preschool facility as possible. Simply put, fewer children mean fewer germs.

When too little PTH is produced, calcium levels in the blood drop while phosphorous levels rise. This condition is known as hypoparathyroidism and causes weakness, anxiety, fatigue, muscle aches and cramps, headaches, muscle spasms, cataracts, depression, mood swings, memory loss and tingling sensations in the fingers, toes and lips.

Kidney Stones
Hyperparathyroidism occurs when too much PTH is secreted into the bloodstream. This creates an imbalance of high calcium levels and low phosphorous levels. Symptoms include osteoporosis, kidney stones, bone and joint pain, weakness, lethargy, loss of concentration, depression, loss of appetite, constipation, nausea and vomiting. The cause may be linked to a benign tumor or enlarged parathyroid gland. Surgery is the preferred treatment for hyperparathyroidism.
Endoscopy
To diagnose Zenker’s diverticulum, patients are usually given a barium swallow. This coats the esophagus and enables it to stand out in contrast on an X-ray. Alternatively, endoscopy or esophageal manometry may be performed.

Multiple Sclerosis
Central vertigo occurs when there is a problem in the brain, usually affecting the brainstem or the cerebellum. These parts of the brain are responsible for interactions between the visual and balance systems; any disturbance can lead to vertigo. The most common cause of central vertigo is a migraine headache. Other less common conditions that can trigger central vertigo include stroke, tumors, acoustic neuroma, multiple sclerosis, alcohol and certain drugs.

When the opposite occurs and too little TH hormone is produced, the metabolism slows down and results in a condition known as hypothyroidism. Symptoms include depression, fatigue, sore muscles, dry skin, puffy face, swollen legs, weight gain, constipation and sensitivity to cold.

There are many possible causes of dizziness including low blood pressure, anemia, dehydration, heat-related disorders, endocrine system disorders (e.g., diabetes, thyroid disease), heart conditions, high blood pressure, viral and bacterial infections, head trauma, hyperventilation, neurological disorders and certain medications.

If you’re suffering from vertigo, your doctor will give you a thorough physical examination and may order a CT scan or MRI.

Computed Tomography
To confirm a nasal fracture, your doctor will perform a physical exam. He or she will press on the sides of your nose and look inside your nostrils for signs of broken bones. Topical anesthetics may be applied before the physical exam to control the pain. An imaging test is usually unnecessary, but based on the severity of your injury a CT scan may be required if a physical exam is too painful to be performed.
Chemotherapy
If you are diagnosed with a tumor, then surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or a combination will probably be recommended. Surgery might involve removing a portion or all of the salivary gland and any cancerous lymph nodes.
Radiation Therapy
There are many other possible causes including Alzheimer’s disease, brain tumor, aneurysm, diabetes, cocaine use, chemical exposure, malnutrition, hormonal imbalances, medications, Parkinson’s disease, rhinoplasty, radiation therapy and old age, among others.

Ear Surgery
It isn’t always known what causes these calcium deposits to break loose, though this is commonly the result of a head injury, inner ear infection, damage from ear surgery or prolonged back position associated with bed rest. Migraines might also play a role. Older patients are susceptible to degeneration of the otolithic membrane related to normal aging.

Dr. Furr is the President of the Oregon Academy of Otolaryngology and serves as Division Chief of Otolaryngology at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland. Dr. Furr grew up in western Pennsylvania. He attended Tufts University in Massachusetts, where he earned his degree in Bio-psychology while representing the University as a NCAA Division III Varsity Soccer player. Dr. Furr completed his premedical studies at Harvard University. While attending Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) honor medical society. Dr. Furr then completed his internship and residency training in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Furr then spent a year in Fellowship training under the direction of Dr. Harry Mittelman, a leader in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, a subspecialty of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Furr is Board Certified in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery. His practice includes the diagnosis and treatment of a broad spectrum of Ear, Nose, and Throat disorders, as well as Cosmetic and Reconstructive Facial Surgery. While his primary focus is in functional and cosmetic surgery of the nose (rhinoplasty), Dr. Furr is also experienced in the use of minimally-invasive techniques to combat aging, injectables, and dermal fillers. His interests also include management and surgery for sinus disorders as well as surgical treatment of skin cancers. In his free time Dr. Furr enjoys spending time with his wife and children, practicing astrophotography, playing golf, and downhill skiing.
