Glaucoma
Glaucoma is not a single disease. It is actually a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve due to an increase in pressure inside the eye, which is called intraocular pressure (IOP). When detected in the early stages, glaucoma can often be controlled, preventing severe vision loss and blindness. However, symptoms of noticeable vision loss often only occur once the disease has progressed. This is why glaucoma is called â€œthe sneak thief of sightâ€ . Unfortunately, once vision is lost from the disease, it usually canâ€™t be restored.

Dr. Brawleyâ€™s wife, Kelly, is a graduate of St. Louis University with a degree in psychology. She completed her Masterâ€™s studies in clinical child psychology. They have three daughters, McKenna, Rylee and DeLaney.Dr. Brawley is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) an active member of the American Optometric Association (AOA), the Missouri Optometric Association (MOA), and the St. Louis Optometric Society (SLOS). He is past president of SLOS and currently serves as an advisor to the Executive Council. He is a member of the Contact Lens and Cornea section of the AOA as well as the Sports Vision Section. He is also a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Fraternity. He was the recipient of the Paragon Vision Science Clinical Excellence Award in 2001. He is an Adjunct Clinical Faculty member of the Washington University School of Medicine - Department of Ophthalmology.
Macular Degeneration
Age related macular degeneration or AMD is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss for people over the age of 60. It is estimated that 2.5 million people in developed countries will suffer visual loss from this disorder and that there are approximately 200,000 new cases diagnosed every year.
Laser Eye Surgery
Because the corneal surface of a keratoconic eye is distorted and irregular, the best visual acuity can only be achieved by replacing it as the primary refractive surface. This can usually be achieved by covering the corneal surface with a contact lens or replacing its central section with a corneal transplant supplied by a donor. Refractive surgery techniques such as LASIK are contra-indicated in cases of keratoconus, because they do not work well when used on thin irregularly shaped corneas and even make the keratoconus worse.

Cataract extractions are the most common surgical procedure performed in the U.S., accounting for more than 2 million procedures a year.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a serious complication of diabetes and a major cause of blindness in the United States. It occurs when the tiny blood vessels in the back part of the eye, also known as the retina, are damaged by high levels of sugar in the blood.

Ultrasound
A cataract is removed using microsurgical techniques. A small (3.0 mm) incision is made into the eye. This incision is so small that, in most cases, it is self-sealing and sutures are not required. The most advanced technique for removing a cataract is called phacoemulsification. In this procedure an ultrasound probe is placed into the cataract. The probe vibrates at a very high speed (20,000 to 40,000 cycles-per-second), which breaks the cataract into many tiny pieces. The pieces are removed using aspiration through a small tube.

A few insurance plans will partially pay for laser vision correction. But, the majority of vision and medical plans consider laser vision correction as cosmetic surgery and will not pay for the procedure. Patients should check with their insurance carrier. Ulcer
Injury to the cornea Constant irritation from inflamed eyelids or misdirected eyelashes may cause a sore (ulcer) to develop on your cornea. Insufficient tearing could predispose you to a corneal infection and loss of vision.
Eczema
Allergic eye symptoms may be seasonal, usually in the late spring or fall when pollen counts are the highest. This is common in persons with allergic rhinitis, asthma, and eczema or hay fever. Up to 80% of hay fever patients may have allergic eye conditions.
